The city of Sannois (Val-d’Oise) will restore the painting on canvas of Utrillo, Carrefour Sannois, stolen in 1940. This is what decided the municipality on the recommendation of the Commission for the Compensation of Victims of Spoliation resulting from the Anti-Semitic Legislation in Force during the Occupation.
The painting, painted in 1936-1937 (this is the colorful period of the artist) was seized by the Nazis in Paris. He was destined to join Goering’s personal collection. But the work changes hands several times. She reappears on the market at a sale at Christie’s in 1975, finds herself in a private collection in the Middle East, … Sotheby’s auctioned it in London in 2004. The city of Sannois then made the acquisition for its Museum Utrillo-Valadon, ignoring the heavy past of the work.
Invited at the plenary session of the CIVS College on February 18, the town hall of Sannois has reiterated its good faith, and committed to follow the recommendation of the CIVS.
